2022

OVID Napa Valley

Tasting Note

2022 marked the third consecutive year of low rainfall across much of the west and OVID was no exception. Cooler temperatures and well-timed rains pushed budbreak back to early April, close to its historical average. The weather warmed slightly for bloom and set the vines up with perfect balance between canopy and clusters. Mild days in June and July passed without incident providing idyllic conditions for our fruit.

Early September brought a push of heat that hastened ripening. Experience and patience provided a steady hand as we waited for the fruit to reach its zenith. The vines too flexed their muscle memory and showed their resilience as they navigated the heat with great aplomb.

As mid-September brought perfect weather, we started picking our way through the estate, wrapping up at the end of the first week of October.

Bold and vibrant, the 2022 OVID Napa Valley radiates with aromas of fresh blackberry, mulberry, black cherry, dark plum and cassis. Notes of bay laurel, graphite and flint intermingle, providing depth and intrigue. Enveloping, this wine exudes graceful power on the palate and will continue to reveal layers of complexity for a long, long time.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Bright red-toned fruit, crushed flowers and forest floor notes open first. The 2022 is bright, sleek, polished and silky, in classic OVID style.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Deep garnet in color, it erupts from the glass with powerful scents of black currant cordial, blueberry preserves, and chocolate mint, followed by hints of Chinese five spice, cedar, and lavender oil. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with black fruit and exotic spice layers, framed by firm, plush tannins and bags of freshness, finishing very long and opulent.

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly deep ruby/purple-hued and has a vibrant, pretty style in its red and black currants fruit as well as cedar pencil, crushed stone, and spring flower-like aromatics. It’s concentrated, has a lively spine of acidity, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. A solidly built, balanced, impressive 2022, it will keep for 15 years if well stored.
