2022

{ 2022 Red Experiment C3.2 }

Tasting Note

. . .

{ Background and Aims }

When we planted our two original blocks we sorted through numerous clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and settled on a handful that we wanted to explore – Clone 337 being one. This clone, more recently arrived from France, is known for ripening slightly earlier and delivering a rich core of black fruits to the wine. Intrigued by the wines made from this clone, we planted just a few acres up here and patiently awaited the fruits of our labor.

{ Methodology }

This wine stands as an important time capsule for us, capturing the expression of this selection as grown at the OVID estate. Once realized, it then acts as a fascinating comparison to this same clone from other sites (2021 Experiment N6.1) as well as different clones from our site (2016 Experiment C4.6). As we explore what the future holds with our new vineyard blocks, this will be an important reference point.

{ Conclusion }

The 2022 Experiment C3.2, a blend made predominantly from the Clone 337, holds true to that original description with a rich dark core of fresh blackberry, mulberry and cassis. Orange blossom, sandalwood, teak and red tobacco provide lift to this classic expression. Broad and decadent, this delicious wine expands across the palate and lingers with exhilarating vibrancy and energy.
