2018

OVID Napa Valley

Tasting Note

Growing seasons like 2018 delight us. Evenly paced rains began the 2018 vintage and refreshed our vineyard as it slept during the first months of the year. A few warm days gently awoke it from its slumber in late March, pushing out the tender shoots. April brought some of our biggest rainfall and set the stage for a luxurious growing season. Long and clement summer days coaxed the grapes along as they slowly reached their full fruition. A warm early September brought on the relatively compressed harvest, starting the second week of October and finishing triumphantly just ten days later.

Rich and enduring, the 2018 vintage finds exuberant expression in this OVID Napa Valley. Mulberry, bay leaf and cola notes entwined with aromas of licorice root, sage, sandalwood, cassis and fresh blackberry radiate from the glass. Powerful and complete, this wine’s poise and levity will exhilarate for decades to come.

Killer notes of blackcurrants, toasted spice, lead pencil, and loamy soil all emerge from this full-bodied beauty.

Killer notes of blackcurrants, toasted spice, lead pencil, and loamy soil all emerge from this full-bodied beauty. With ripe, building tannins, an expansive, layered, textured, and flat-out stunning purity of fruit, this remarkable mountain Cabernet Sauvignon will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 30 years or more in cold cellars.

98+ points.

The 2018 is a wine of energy and tension.

The 2018 OVID is a very delicate, elegant wine, certainly relative to the wines that have been made here in the past. Silky and perfumed, with tons of grace, the 2018 is super-expressive today. Bright floral notes, red cherry, plum and spice are all beautifully delineated. The 2018 is a wine of energy and tension. It will be interesting to see how it develops in bottle and if it gains more body. Today, it is very much lithe in build. The 2018 has also just been bottled, and these wines often blossom over time. I am super-impressed by the precision here.
