2013

OVID Napa Valley Syrah

Tasting Note

2013 was an epic year in Napa Valley - a year of remarkable alignment. The second year of drought started with an early and dry budbreak and set followed by a warm, long and seamless growing season. Harvest was impeccable too, stretching the length of September, allowing us a leisurely picking window and yielding expressive and utterly ripe fruit from each grape varietal in our vineyard.

The 2013 OVID Syrah is from the incomparable 2013 vintage is both opulent and deeply nuanced, displaying the intriguing fusion of sage, camphor, floral and blackberry that defines Syrah while also clearly expressing this red rocky mountain site. While Syrah is only a small part of what we do, it is a joy each year to make such a pure and varietally expressive wine.

Antonio Galloni

The last wine in this tasting of 2013s, the Syrah, is equally brilliant and also deeply nuanced. Lavender, sage, mint, licorice and inky fruit form a compelling backdrop of aromas, flavors and textures in a wine that dazzles from the very first taste. Tasted next to the 2012, the 2013 is more varietally expressive and finely-cut, with tons of depth and spectacular balance.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

There are only four barrels (100 cases) of the 2013 Syrah, which was planted in 2006. This 100% Syrah displays the meaty, camphor, floral and blackberry character of this varietal and hits the palate with a gush of sweet tannin and opulent, rich, concentrated fruit. It should drink well for the next decade at the minimum.
