OVID Napa Valley Syrah
Tasting Note

Our Syrah is truly handcrafted in tiny batches, and our non-interventionist methodology has been steadily evolving since we made the first OVID Syrah in 2009. We included a portion of whole clusters in our tiny open-top tank to add some structure and intrigue. Following spontaneous fermentation, it was aged in Burgundian French oak barrels with minimal racking until bottling in June.
The 2022 OVID Napa Valley Syrah abounds with fresh notes of blueberry, dark plum, vanilla bean and rose petal. Aromas of sage, mint, black peppercorn, sarsaparilla and iron intermingle across the palate. Suave on entry, this wine builds beguiling power and depth revealing its delightful layers slowly. This wine will continue to tell its tale of joy for decades to come.

Harvested before the heat on Labor Day, the 2022 Syrah is a classic Syrah in its gamey, peppery, wild profile. Darker berries, lavender, pepper, bacon fat, and violet notes all give this a La Mouline-like character, and it’s full-bodied, has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, and integrated yet present tannins. Drink bottles over the coming decade or so, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve longer.
