OVID Napa Valley

OVID Napa Valley is our flagship wine and also our compass. In the way it embodies the tensions and intricacies of both our vineyard and philosophy, the wine guides us as much as we guide it.

Always a blend that changes subtly from year to year, OVID Napa Valley is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, which established the voice of our property while connecting it with the greater continuity of Napa Valley. Cabernet Franc, an independent and contrasting voice, provides a perfect counterpoint. Small portions of Merlot and Petit Verdot smooth edges and strengthen foundations. They coalesce to become a profound, congruous wine, whose beauties and pleasures – not unlike an epic story – lie in its depth, vitality, timelessness and complexity.

Tasting Notes

2007 OVID Napa Valley

The start of the 2007 vintage started out as a contrast to the previous couple with a relatively dry and warm early spring. Buds burst forth almost a month ahead of the previous year. Summer slowed the rapid start to the growing season and lavished us with mild days, few topping 100 degrees. As harvest approached, Labor Day weekend brought a brief heatwave, ripening the grapes and bringing flavors into focus. A similarly long and deliberate harvest wrapped up a sensational vintage just a week before rains fell.

2007 is undoubtedly a lavish vintage for Napa Valley and the 2007 OVID Napa Valley is downright extravagant. This wine is highly aromatic with scents of fresh raspberries, candied cherry, nutmeg and chocolate. It has an intense perfume; both very pure but deep and layered. On the palate, the wine's rich fruit core and fine tannins are expansive with flavors of fresh berries and warm spice which linger for a long and graceful finish.

Critical Acclaim

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

It displays beautifully perfumed blue and black fruits intermixed with some pen ink, acacia flowers, and black raspberries. Gorgeous, subtle smoke and a floral character follow through into the sweet tannins of this full-bodied, opulent wine, which builds incrementally and has a gloriously luxurious texture. There's not one trace of astringency to this seamlessly wrought wine, which is the liquid equivalent of haute couture. Already drinking well, it should continue to evolve for two decades or more.

Wine Spectator

This shows uncommon depth and elegance to its range of flavors. Rich and layered, with tiers of mocha-laced currant, blackberry, sage, mineral and graphite, at points firm and at others supple, ending with touches of tobacco, sage and espresso.

Antonio Galloni

There's a Right Bank opulence here that's compelling.

Dark red-ruby. Black raspberry, graphite minerality and oak-derived spices and caramel on the slightly liqueur-like nose, complemented by hints of earth, tobacco and molten tropical dark chocolate. Wonderfully plush, sweet and deep, showing an almost exotic character to its fruit and still in need of time to absorb some more of its baby fat; there's a Right Bank opulence here that's compelling.
