The Loc. Cit. Story

An abbreviation of the Latin phrase Loco Citato, the term Loc. Cit. is used in footnotes to mean “in the place cited” or “from the same place.” (For reference abbreviation enthusiasts, it is similar to ibid; but more specific, indicating not only the same work as previously cited, but from the same place in that work, e.g. page or paragraph.) While obscure and esoteric, the term can be poetically extended to suggest: A specific place, full of meaning, returned to again and again.

This is how we see it, though to this particular block of vines we return for bottling only in selected vintages. Since both block and wine are completely composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, they are outliers in the OVID Napa Valley collection. All other Cabernet-based wines are blends. In addition, Loc. Cit. harnesses the radiant capability of this particular block to produce what amounts to an exploration of the pure power of our site.

Tasting Notes

2017 Loc. Cit.

The 2017 vintage was not a typical year in Napa Valley. Enduring rains ended the long drought, and in May, hail challenged the freshly growing shoots. Fortuitously we ushered the grapes into our cellar just before the fires began to rage. We met each of these challenges with careful planning, deliberate decisions and collaborative solidarity. We are especially grateful for our amazing vineyard team, who sowed cover crops to soak up the winter rains and later applied water for the vines to thrive during the summer heat spikes. Thanks to all of these efforts, the 2017 vintage resulted in wine of the highest standard, possibly some of the best wines OVID has produced to date.

The resultant 2017 OVID Loc. Cit. is rich and compelling, densely packed with pure notes of black cherry, mulberry, cola and licorice. Resonant and delicious power is framed by the vibrancy and freshness of this utterly incredible vintage.

It is a truly stellar wine.

The 2017 Loc. Cit. (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a big, opulent wine built on serious vertical intensity and explosiveness. In the glass, the 2017 has tons of richness and equally imposing tannic heft. Readers will have to be patient, as the Loc. Cit. very clearly needs time in the cellar to be at its best. It is a truly stellar wine.

Only made in top vintages (2010 and 2013), the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Loc. Cit. is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that's a cellar selection from two blocks on the property. It's cut from the same cloth as the OVID yet has a kiss more purity in its creme de cassis, crushed tobacco, crushed rock minerality, and white flowers. It has incredible minerality, full-bodied richness, good acidity and cut, loads of structure, and a great finish. It needs time, but it's a thrilling wine.
