The Hexameter Story

The first of our wines to graduate from the Experiment program to a flagship wine, Hexameter began with the simple inquiry: How compelling can a Cabernet Franc-focused wine from our site be? That early Experiment from 2005 produced an intriguing Franc-centric wine, and the next four years were used to refine the wine, particularly honing in on the best blocks within the vineyard.

Hexameter is the poetic meter used by Ovid in his Metamorphoses and, for that matter, in much Greek and Roman epic poetry. The concept of meter intrigues us, as meter contains, animates and organizes the information contained by a poem’s words. Transposed to wine, the vineyard is the impulse behind a poem, and the wine its meter and language. As such, the wine Hexameter reveals a certain rhythm and structure in our vineyard that articulates its clear and profound affinity for Cabernet Franc.

Tasting Notes

2012 OVID Hexameter

The 2012 vintage was prosperous and mild. On our little piece of Pritchard Hill, budbreak began in the second week of April – roughly a week early. Long and temperate days meted out the growing season to follow, making it a vintage with a sense of luxury. There was time to study the vineyard, time to consider each small and meaningful farming decision, and time to focus on each section individually to elicit the best fruit, row by row, vine by vine. Harvest was also expansive, lasting more than three weeks, from the third week of September to mid-October.

The elegant 2012 Hexameter combines the captivating Cabernet Franc of this vintage with the velvet and bright red fruits of Cabernet Sauvignon and a dash of silken Merlot. The resulting wine speaks of raspberry, boysenberry, licorice root and cola, while suggesting orange blossom, sage and nutmeg. This Hexameter is at once fresh and lush, with indelible flavor & finesse.
