The Loc. Cit. Story

An abbreviation of the Latin phrase Loco Citato, the term Loc. Cit. is used in footnotes to mean “in the place cited” or “from the same place.” (For reference abbreviation enthusiasts, it is similar to ibid; but more specific, indicating not only the same work as previously cited, but from the same place in that work, e.g. page or paragraph.) While obscure and esoteric, the term can be poetically extended to suggest: A specific place, full of meaning, returned to again and again.

This is how we see it, though to this particular block of vines we return for bottling only in selected vintages. Since both block and wine are completely composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, they are outliers in the OVID Napa Valley collection. All other Cabernet-based wines are blends. In addition, Loc. Cit. harnesses the radiant capability of this particular block to produce what amounts to an exploration of the pure power of our site.

Tasting Notes

2010 Loc. Cit.

The 2010 vintage was an unusually long and cool growing season in Napa Valley. At OVID, this more European-styled season of delay rewarded our extraordinary patience and meticulous care, yielding strong and tender grapes that were optimally ripened. Harvest stretched late into the season, finishing just a day before the rains.

The first edition of OVID Loc. Cit. is both a singular and classic Cabernet Sauvignon. An incredible purity of fruit dominates the nose. Behind the many layers of fruit are lovely notes of tobacco, flint and violets. The weight of the wine fills the palate and makes a luxuriant impression that lasts and lasts.

Critical Acclaim

Antonio Galloni

Rich, layered and totally voluptuous, the 2010 impresses for its vibrant red fruit and stunning personality.

OVID's 2010 Loc. Cit. (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) emerges from two adjacent blocks on the property planted with Clone 4 Cabernet. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar and a host of earthy notes all add complexity, with vibrant notes of underlying minerality that provide support. With time in the glass the flavors become increasingly vivid in a dramatic Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the essence of this pristine site on Pritchard Hill. What a gorgeous wine this is.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The estate's Loc. Cit. (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is beautiful beyond words.

A huge, towering wine, the 2010 saturates every corner of the palate with black fruit, grilled savory herbs, melted road tar, smoke and licorice. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the huge, enveloping finish. The tannins are there, but they are nearly completely buried by the wine's huge extract. Today, the 2010 is imposing, dark and very much brooding, but is also utterly breathtaking. At times, the Loc. Cit. is bigger and richer than the OVID, but the wines are constantly changing in the glass. It will be fascinating to follow both over the coming years and beyond. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.
