OVID Napa Valley

OVID Napa Valley is our flagship wine and also our compass. In the way it embodies the tensions and intricacies of both our vineyard and philosophy, the wine guides us as much as we guide it.

Always a blend that changes subtly from year to year, OVID Napa Valley is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, which established the voice of our property while connecting it with the greater continuity of Napa Valley. Cabernet Franc, an independent and contrasting voice, provides a perfect counterpoint. Small portions of Merlot and Petit Verdot smooth edges and strengthen foundations. They coalesce to become a profound, congruous wine, whose beauties and pleasures – not unlike an epic story – lie in its depth, vitality, timelessness and complexity.

Tasting Notes

2009 OVID Napa Valley

The glorious 2009 growing season made all of us here at OVID grateful to be living in these times. The season started out dry and brilliant. Modulated cool nights followed by beautiful warm days stacked up to make a season densely packed with days of ripening sunshine and no extreme temperatures. Harvest began September 11 with our final fruit coming in on October 5, just days before a large thunderstorm traveled over Napa. The milder conditions found atop Pritchard Hill lead to wines of great power, structure and depth to be enjoyed for years to come.

The 2009 OVID Napa Valley is seamlessly layered with aromas of mulberry, fresh boysenberry, roasted chestnuts and sandalwood, and wonderfully dense with a rich, precise core of polished tannins. We take joy in the wine of this vintage for its power, depth, and deliciousness.

Critical Acclaim

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2009 OVID is stunningly beautiful. Endless layers of fruit saturate the palate as this rich, intense wine conquers the heart and intellect. A totally vivid wine, the 2009 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Over the time I followed it, the 2009 gained finesse and elegance in the glass, which bodes quite well for the future. Intense graphite, crushed rocks and pencil shaving nuances add energy to the polished, huge finish.

Wine Spectator

Gorgeous aromas, plump and generous, lead to ripe, rich, juicy plum and black cherry flavors that show touches of cedar, fresh earth, black licorice and spice. Gains momentum and finesse, with a long, subtle, detailed finish.
